Yoon Suk Yeol: Korean music community reacts to verdict

On Friday, South Korea’s impeached president was removed from office, four months after declaring martial law. Here, some of our favourite musicians share their thoughts on this historical moment.

“We welcome the Constitutional Court’s decision to uphold the impeachment. We hope people will continue to remember and pay attention to the voices of those who stood together.

There are still many issues we must fight for: mobility rights for people with disabilities, unfair dismissals, women’s rights—including the safety and rights of sex workers, and the issue at Dongduk Women’s University—the enactment of an anti-discrimination law for sexual minorities, as well as animal rights and environmental issues.”

“A few days after martial law was declared, I was so distraught that I forgot my guitar and didn't bring it to a gig.

After that, the impeachment was so obvious that it seemed like a foregone conclusion. It was hard to be out on the streets every day, nervous as hell.

But now that the impeachment has happened, I hope I can go back to my daily life and not forget my guitar for future concerts.”

“계엄 선포 며칠 후 공연에 기타를 깜박하고 안가져갈 정도로 정신이 나가있었어요. 그 이후 탄핵이라는 너무도 당연한 결과가 당연하지 않게 다가와, 하루하루 피가마르게 긴장하며 거리에 나가야했던 상황자체가 참담했고요. 하지만 이제 탄핵이 되었으니, 다시 일상으로 돌아가 앞으로 공연에 기타를 깜박하는 일은 없었으면 좋겠습니다.”

The reason I fought on the streets every week for 123 days was because I couldn't let everything they fought so hard to protect fall apart again. I started music to create a better world, and I will continue to raise my voice.”
