The Music That Made Me - Kimin Kim

As part of a new series, someone will be sharing their journey through the music that shaped them. This week, we talked to PCR and Gorymurgy guitarist - Kimin.

With his various bands, Kimin’s music manages to do something very difficult - be both weirdly eclectic and anthemic. He’s a legend in Seoul’s indie scene thanks to his energetic live performances and eccentric approach to guitar playing.

PCR recently unleashed their new EP, and it’s one of the weirdest new releases of the year. The fiery art rock style of the four tracks harks back to the Velvet Underground and Modern Lovers.

Kimin runs a cafe/bar called Happy Heavy Drinker in Seoul.

중학교 시절, 대부분의 소년들이 그러하듯이 세상 모든 아픔에 민감하게 반응할 나이라 피칠갑이 된 커플이 그려진 그 아트워크를 보고 이 앨범을 사지 않을 수가 없었어요. 이걸 시작으로 MCR의 라이브 앨범을 모으고 티셔츠도 사 입고 그랬는데 지금은 다들 어디로 갔는지 모르겠네요.

I was in middle school, and like most boys, I was sensitive to all the pain in the world. I couldn't resist buying this album when I saw the artwork with the couple in bloodied armour. It started me on a path of collecting MCR's live albums, buying their t-shirts, and I don't know where they all went now.

Guided By Voices - a good flying bird

이 곡에는 드럼도 없고 베이스도 없고 기타와 보컬만 있지만 그것들이 필요 없을 정도의 멋진 멜로디와 사운드 질감이 있습니다. 어렸을 때 GBV를 발견하고 밴드사운드가 무조건적으로 완벽히 두껍고, 파괴적인 구성일 필요가 없다는 것을 깨달았네요. 그것들이 제가 지금 만들고 부르는 음악에도 큰 영향을 미쳤습니다.

This song has no drums, no bass, just guitar and vocals, but it has such a great melody and sound texture that it doesn't need them. I discovered GBV when I was younger and realised that a band's sound doesn't have to be absolutely, perfectly thick and destructive. They've been a huge influence on the music I make and sing now.

Mika - Lover Boy

학창시절 용돈벌이를 위해 레스토랑에서 파트타임 일을 했는데, 단체식사와 행사를 진행하는 곳이라 진행자가 행사 전 스피커를 가져와서 노래를 틀더라구요. 그리고 계속 이 노래가 반복되어서 나왔습니다. 계속, 계속, 계속. 그때 머리에 꽂혀버렸습니다. 당시에는 스마트폰 음성검색 시스템도 없어서 가사를 적어놓고 나중에 찾아 들었던 것이 기억나네요.Mika의 요즘 음악에 대해 깊게 알고 있지는 않지만, 이후 초기 Mika의 음악도 찾아 듣게 되고, 지금까지도 좋아합니다.

When I was in school, I worked part-time at a restaurant to help pay the bills. They did group meals and events where the host would bring in a speaker and play a song before the event. And this song would come on over and over again, over and over again, over and over again. I remember writing down the lyrics and looking them up later, because I didn't have a voice search system on my phone at the time. I'm not very familiar with Mika's current music, but I've since discovered some of his early stuff, and I still love it.

Car Seat Headrest - Boxing Day

잘 찢어진 사운드의 질감과, 탁월한 멜로디센스에 드라마틱한 긴 구성. 저품질의 불결한 소리가 어떻게 우리의 마음을 자극하는지 생각하게 만듭니다. 대부분의 초기 Car Seat Headrest의 노래가 저에게 그런 의미를 가지고 있습니다.

Well-torn sound textures, great melodic sense and dramatic long compositions. Makes me think about how low-quality, dirty sounds can stimulate our minds. Most of the early Car Seat Headrest songs do that for me.

Superfood - Melting

많이 유명하지 않은 밴드의 많이 유명하지 않은 곡인데, 처음 들었을 때 자연스럽게 빠져들었어요. 뮤직비디오도 심플하고 촌스러운데 동시에 쿨합니다. 이후 Superfood의 다른 곡 들을 찾아 들었는데 비슷한 음악이 없어서 절망했던 기억이 있습니다.

It's a not-so-famous song by a not-so-famous band, and I fell in love with it the first time I heard it. The music video is simple and cheesy, but cool at the same time. I remember trying to find other songs by Superfood afterwards and despairing because I couldn't find anything similar.

Steve Reich - Different Trains

저는 서울 연희동에 Happy Heavy Drinker라는 카페 겸 식당을 운영하고 있습니다. 이곳을 운영하면서 노동요 삼아 다양한 음악을 많이 듣곤 합니다. 제 플레이리스트는 대다수가 록 음악이기 때문에.. 피상적인 구성의 반복으로 인해 귀가 피로해 질 수 있는 손님들에게 신선함을 주고자 미니멀리즘 음악을 틀기도 합니다. 발매된지는 꽤 지났지만 제가 최근에 Steve Reich에 빠져서 이 앨범을 선택했네요. 듣는 재미도 있고 귀에 잘 거슬리지도 않습니다. 거슬리는지 아닌지는 제 기준이긴 하지만요

I own a cafe and restaurant called Happy Heavy Drinker in Yeonhee-dong, Seoul. I listen to a lot of different music as a way to relax while running the place. My playlist is mostly rock music, so... I also play minimalist music to keep things fresh for my customers, whose ears can get tired from the repetition of superficial compositions. I chose this album because I've been into Steve Reich lately, even though it's been a while since it was released.

The first gig I went to / 가 처음 갔던 콘서트

The Cribs, Seoul, 2016

소규모 공연까지 모든 공연을 통틀자면... 잘 기억나지는 않는데, 아마 서울에 있는 어떤 구린 로컬밴드였을 것 같아요. 어느정도 규모가 있는 단독 공연은 2016년 서울에서 본 The Cribs 공연이었네요. 엄청난 규모의 공연장은 아니었고, 관객도 200명 남짓 되는 적은 수였던 걸로 기억합니다. 하지만 진성 팬들만 와서 그런지 현장분위기는 뜨거웠습니다. 당시 Gorymurgy의 Tommy와 함께 공연장에 갔는데, Ryan Jarman이 마이크 스탠드의 끝을 잡고 관객석으로 길게 뻗었을 때가 있었고 Tommy와 함께 그걸 잡으려다가 실패한 것이 기억나네요.

If you count all the smaller shows... I don't really remember, I think it was some shitty local band in Seoul. The biggest solo show I've ever seen was The Cribs in Seoul in 2016. It wasn't a huge venue, I think it was a small crowd, maybe 200 people. But it was a really intense atmosphere because it was just the real fans, and I remember being there with Tommy from Gorymurgy at the time, and Ryan Jarman grabbed the end of the microphone stand and stretched it out into the audience, and Tommy and I were trying to catch it and failing.

Glenn Branca - The Spectacular Commodity

풀볼륨으로 클리핑이 일어날 때까지 재생시키고, 사람들은 웅성웅성 합니다.마지막에 메이저키로 바뀌는 부분도 있어서 우울한 장례식은 되지 않을 것 같습니다.

I play it at full volume until it clips, and people are screaming. There's a change to a major key at the end, so it won't be a depressing funeral.

The Libertines - Death on the Stairs

리버틴즈 곡 들 중 가장 애정하는 노래입니다. 어렸을 때부터 지금까지 질리지도 않고 열심히 듣고 있습니다. 특히 후반 기타 솔로부터는 절대 질릴 수 없죠

This is one of my favorite Libertines songs. I've been listening to it since I was a kid and I never get tired of it, especially the guitar solo at the end.

Let's say you have a limit of 100 points to spend on listening to each song in your life. In my school days, I've already spent about 98 points on this song, and I'm still suffering from that overload.

Wilco - Pot Kettle Black

저에게 있어, 순수한 눈물덩어리 같은 곡. 이 곡 말고도 이 앨범에 있는 소리들은 하나같이 저를 울게 만듭니다.

For me, it's a pure tearjerker. Every single other sound on this album makes me cry.

Gorymurgy - Canopy Tree

사실 아주 예전에, 아마 Covid19가 유행이기도 전 쯤, 꼬리물기 멤버가 4명이던 시절 잼을 하면서 레코딩해논 파일이 이 음악의 시초인데, 이후 몇 년 동안 건들지도 않다가 Gorymurgy가 Tommy와 저, 두 명이 되고 나서 다시 작업을 시작한 노래에요. Gorymurgy 첫 앨범의 첫번째곡이자 타이틀곡이기도 합니다. Gorymurgy라는 이름 하에 정말 많은 곳을 가고 많은 것을 했는데 그런 기억들이 곡에 감정적으로 크게 들어 있습니다. 곡은 기억을 담아놓는 액자같다고 생각하는데 이 액자는 상당히 깨끗하지만 들어있는 사진은 오래된 사진인... 그런 느낌입니다.

It was actually recorded a long time ago, probably before Covid19 was even a thing, when we had four members and we were jamming. Then we didn't touch it for a couple years, and then we started working on it again when Gorymurgy became just two people, Tommy and I. It's the first song on the first Gorymurgy album, and it's also the title track. We've been to so many places and done so many things under the Gorymurgy name, and those memories are very emotionally present in the song. I think the song is like a picture frame that holds memories, and this picture frame is quite clean, but the photos inside are old photos... It's like that.
