Busan's Ovantgarde Turns Eight: A Month-Long Celebration of Independent Music
One of Busan's most beloved independent music venues is marking a milestone. Ovantgarde, nestled near the Kyungsung University district, is celebrating its eighth anniversary this May with a full month of live performances, a special market, and a headline show that has been eight years in the making.
Since opening in 2018, Ovantgarde has carved out a distinct identity in Busan's music scene through hands-on, in-house curation that prioritises both local acts and carefully chosen international guests. Each year, the venue has marked its anniversary with a dedicated series designed to showcase the breadth of Korea's indie landscape, and this year is no different.
The 8th Anniversary Series runs under the sub-theme "Time goes on, Music goes on," a nod to the venue's resilience and its belief that live music, at its most powerful, happens in the intimate space where artists and audiences breathe the same air.
Every weekend throughout May, Ovantgarde's stage will be filled with some of the most compelling acts in the Korean independent scene. Busan's own are well represented: Say Sue Me, Hathaway, Soumbalgwang, Seaweed Mustache, and Erotic Worms Exhibition all feature in the lineup. Joining them are artists travelling from Seoul and the broader Gyeongsang region, including Lazybone, Gicuhashi, Hollow Jan, and Tokai.
The series closes with what may be its most anticipated night yet, a joint performance between Busan icons Say Sue Me and Chinese Football, widely regarded as symbols of the Asian emo and math rock scenes. It will mark Chinese Football's first appearance in Korea in eight years, a reunion that promises to be something special for fans on both sides of the border.
On Children's Day, 5th May, Ovantgarde will host the Ovantgarde Warehouse Sale, a flea market with a twist. Musicians themselves will serve as vendors, selling personal items alongside official merchandise, adding an informal, communal dimension to the celebrations.
Ticket sales are set to begin in the second week of April on a rolling basis. Full lineups, schedules, and updates can be found on the venue's official social media at @ovantgarde or via their Linktree at linktr.ee/OVGD8thSeries.
For a venue that has spent eight years championing independent music in Busan, May looks like a fitting way to mark the occasion and, if the theme holds true, just the beginning of whatever comes next.
